What Kind of Putter is Right For You?
This week’s question is from Michelle, who is in LA in California.
Michelle asks, “I keep changing putters hoping it’ll fix my putting. How do I know when it’s the design that’s wrong and not just my confidence?”
Okay Michelle, putter design is extremely important.
As an example, we have blade-style putters, which are kind of small and squatty. Then we have mallet-style putters, which are the larger-style putters.
Now, as a rule of thumb — and we’re talking about design here — a blade-style putter will not be as forgiving for you as a mallet-style putter.
So sometimes, as an example, if we are a lower handicap player, we may choose a blade-style putter because it’s smaller, it’s squattier, and maybe we’re more used to using that style of putter. But also because it gives us a lot of feedback, which helps us hone our skills.
If you are perhaps a higher handicap golfer, or somebody who struggles a little bit more with consistency, you probably want to look at a mallet-style putter purely for the forgiveness factor.
It is about personal preference, but I do think that mallet-style putters are good for most people and will help build confidence.
