Does Your Putter Feel Right?

Valerie,

Why do putters feel different off the face?

Julia, Charleston, South Carolina

Julia,
As an example, I have one of my putters here, a Frankly Frog. The Frog itself is CNC machined from a solid block of aluminium. It has tungsten weights back and split. And what that does is it creates a lot of forgiveness across and up and down the face.

So with this putter what you would experience is a nice soft feel. No matter where you really hit it on the face, you’re not going to detect that kind of “clunk factor”, we call it. What some manufacturers do is they will economise in the way that they are designing the putter and what they’ll do is they’ll give it a nice soft insert, but make it out of a material like stainless steel, which is a much more sharp feeling off the face.

However they use the insert to dampen that and make it seem a bit softer. Over time, the inserts basically degrade slightly. So essentially that clunky feel will come through more and more. When considering a new putter, look at the material type of the putter and look at the forgiveness.

Now in terms of paying attention to feel versus just picking one and sticking with it… yes, pay attention to feel because it’s really important that you love your putter, and once you find one you love, stick with it.

Hope this helps,
Valerie
